We spoke with designer Merche Segarra to find out more.

What is the creative process like?

My studio is a spacious, bright and cheerful space, and I am kept company by books, designs, children’s drawings, fabrics, mannequins, many magazines and all my favourites from the Jesus Peiro collections. The process involves sketching out ideas around shape, materials and details that will make up a unique dress, honing the sketch and then finally bringing it to life as a prototype.

We’ve heard that you have been designing with the same Faber-Castell pencil for 17 years. What would you say are the most important items you own, in both your personal and professional life?

At work my pencil is a gift from a person I greatly admire. In my personal life the most important things to me are my engagement and wedding rings.

What message do you look to convey with your latest collection?

The love of craftsmanship and the excellence of the production team at Jesus Peiro. Turning 35 as a company is an honour!

What’s been your favourite dress project to work on in your career so far? What inspired it?

Each Jesus Peiro collection turns out to be my favourite project, each one renews my inspiration and allows me to create with enthusiasm.

If you could collaborate on a collection with someone from any period in time, across any industry, who would it be and why?

I would like to work with artisans who use certain techniques in embroidery and weaving so that I could introduce them to the dresses.

Have you any pearls of wisdom for aspiring designers?

Be curious, passionate and work extremely hard!

Who would be your dream celebrity to dress for their wedding?

Natalie Portman: I love her style.

Do you have an all-time favourite fashion trend? What’s one you can’t stand?

My favourite trend is mixing materials, decontextualizing, mixing and matching. I can’t stand excess without harmony.

What is your vision for the future of Jesus Peiro?

Expansion to offer high quality collections to a wider audience in the bridal world.

Finally, can you reveal a little bit more about what YOU love – what’s your favourite…

•    Music: Ennio Morricone
