Shikoba Bride is the striking independent British bridal label from Becca Jenkinson for free-spirited brides. We take a deep dive into breathtaking new collection, Nomad.
I have always loved fashion and even as a small kid I was obsessed with rock stars and royalty getting married and seeing what they wore. It was usually something a bit out of the ordinary or very over the top! That appealed to me. I don’t think there is anything wrong with standing out or going against the grain, I’d like to think that ethos is how the brand has continued to evolve. Don’t be worried about being a bit different!
The inspiration for Nomad was visualizing our brides and their dream destinations, mountains, sandy beaches, wildflower meadows, urban landscapes, woodlands, country houses and everywhere in between. The theme that connects it is a wandering spirit vibe, brides who are independent and looking for something a little different from the usual.
There is quite a romantic, ethereal vibe to bridal at the minute, along side clean lines. There is a bit of both in this collection, while staying true to Shikoba’s luxury bohemian roots. I’ve included some new laces into the new collection that have a bit of an edgy vibe, alongside a bit of cottage core too. Ultimately all very wearable and versatile for styling, however the bride wants to express their own individuality.
So difficult to choose, but I think I probably enjoyed creating Avalon the most and it’s name is a nod to my love for Glastonbury. I just fell for the fabric, it’s an delicate recycled crinkle chiffon fabric gown, it has separate blousy sleeves, a high split and cut out midriff (both are optional) and a subtle prairie tier ruffle on the skirt. It’s really romantic but with a sassy edgy vibe.
I’m always so happy when a bride chooses a Shikoba dress for their wedding, as it’s just a complete privilege to be part of such an important celebration and moment in someones life. When one of our brides reaches out to say how much they enjoyed wearing their Shikoba dress and how it made them feel, its just the best!
I think that’s a such a key factor in design, because if you feel good, you’re going to be confident and relaxed on the day and that is really the ultimate aim.
I’m incredibly proud and excited to introduce the first of the "Shikoba Wild" pieces within the Nomad Collection. These Shikoba Wild designs have been made in London, from fabrics sourced in the UK and some also feature recycled eco fabrics too. (Avalon, Sadie, Saskia, Montana, Taylor) While all of my designs are ethically and sustainably made, minimising our carbon footprint wherever possible is important, (for example our packing is and always has been at least 95% plastic free, recycled and recyclable.)
I think what makes it special is each dress is it’s own character so will appeal to lots of different brides, no two dresses are the same, neither are our brides. The eclectic feel, means it is an incredibly versatile collection and I always reflect on our existing designs so that each collection relates and the new pieces often create new ways to mix up designs already in our portfolio.
I would love for Shikoba to known as always being brave enough to do our own thing, to be ahead of the curve, because we aren’t trying to fit in. That Shikoba is happy to be a bit disruptive and different, which doesn’t mean outlandish, its always wearable by all brides of all shapes and irrelevant of dress size. I think it’s what makes us unique.
...And fringing and tassels..we’re probably known for those!
